Ceragard
ceramic composite armor is a laminated composite of Al2O3/B4C
ballistic ceramics with high performance aramid polyethylene
fiber. It combines high energy-absorption with lightweight.
When attacked by projectile threat£¬the fracture of ultra-hard
ceramics is capable of dissipating m ost
of the projectile energy£¬while the residue energy is completely
absorbed by thin layers of high strength and high modulus fabric
backing. This type of composite system can be designed to be
significantly lighter than ballistic steel and significantly
thinner than ll-fabric systems of comparable stopping power.
Comparing with ballistic steel, it can reduce the area density
of an armor concept by 50-75%. Especially for wheeled military
vehicles, this weight advantage can essentially improve the vehicles
performance or increasing its payload,
so more equipment or soldiers
can be transported.
Depending on application requirements,
Ceragard offers a wide
range of materials: Al2O3 or B4C front, aramid or polyethylene
backing. In many cases, a system using
Ceragard is also more
cost-effective than an all-metal or all-fabric system. |
